Global FTTH broadband rankings revealed
FTTH (Fibre-to-the-Home) broadband that can deliver download speeds of 100Mbs or above, has the highest penetration in South Korea (58%), followed by the UAE (56%), Hong Kong (45%), Japan (42%) and Taiwan (29%), according to the 2012 Global Ranking of FTTH nations from FTTH Council Europe.
FTTH cables reach the premises of customers so they are capable of offering much faster speeds than FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) broadband lines.
The findings show that 30 countries worldwide managed to have a minimum 1% of their homes subscribing to FTTH broadband connection by the end of 2011, while only 21 countries had this penetration level in the previous year.
When it comes to number of FTTH connections, China topped the table with 22.2 million, followed by South Korea (10.4 million), the USA (9.6 million) and Russia (4.5 million).
As for Europe, FTTH take up had been higher in countries like Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria and Latvia.
However, the UK which has been developing slower FTTC broadband infrastructure, could not find a place in the global FTTH developed broadband nations rankings.
