IPTV worldwide subscriptions reach 26.9 million
Global broadband connections had reached 445 million by the end of June 2009 (Q2), adding 12.9 million new connections during the quarter, according to the latest findings from Broadband Forum and Point Topic research firm.
Ranked 6th among the top ten global broadband nations, UK saw the total broadband connections jumping from 16,718,400 in Q2 2008 to 17,838,200 in Q2 2009.
Among the broadband regions, Asia Pacific and Eastern Europe continue to add new broadband lines while Western Europe and North America saw the numbers falling, though, marginally. China, Japan, Germany, Italy and Brazil are some top nations with signficant growth during the last year.

The findings also showed that DSL has majority market share (64%) while cable (21%) and fibre broadband (13%) are quite lagging behind. Satellite broadband and wireless internet have just 1% market share.
IPTV services had seen a remarkable growth (11%) with 26.9 million global customers while in Asia, IPTV connections grew at 54% to reach 3 million during the quarter.
George Dobrowski, Chairman of Broadband Forum said:
“This report shows that, while broadband adoption is not immune from the state of the world economy, the technology continues to move forward and I believe this year has shown that broadband expansion is not limited to the top industrialized countries, but is a key factor in assisting developing nations to gain a foothold in today’s tough market.”
