UK broadband ranked 33rd in global Speedtest Index

The average UK download speed is around 7.69Mbps which places it 33rd in the latest global broadband speed survey.

Average global consumer download speed is 7.67 Mbps while the Europe averages 10.03Mbps, according to the Net Index of the broadband speed testing firm, Ookla.

South Korea is the fastest broadband nation with average download speeds of 34.19Mbps followed by Latvia(24.3Mbps), Republic of Maldova (21.55Mbps) and Japan(20.35Mbps).

Sweden tops the EU nations with downstream speeds of 19.81Mbps while Romania(18.56Mbps), Bulgaria(17.55Mbps), Netherlands(17Mbps), Lituania(16.7Mbps) and Portugal(14.65Mbps) also come in top 10 rankings around the globe.

In UK, Loughton in Essex, Welling in South East London, Clitheroe, Dartford and Troon reported better average speeds than other places.

Among the top 30 cities, Latvia’s Riga came in second after Seoul, with download speeds of 27.90Mbps. London is not among the top 30 world cities, however, the list includes many European cities like Hamburg, Helsinki, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Oslo and Prague.

The UK could rank just 65th in upload speeds with average speeds of 0.9Mbps which can be of concern for business users who need to transfer large files over internet.

Last year’s Ofcom survey showed average download speeds of 4.1Mbps for the UK while the Akamai speed test results in January 2010 showed 3.4Mbps against the global average of 1.7Mbps.

Ookla has gathered the global broadband speed information for the Net Index, based on the speed test results gathered from its websites – Speedtest and Pingtest. Its rankings use the rolling average throughput in Mbps over the past 30 days where the mean distance between the client and the server is less than 300 miles.
