UK Internet provider, BT’s on-going Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) broadband rollout can now reach 1.5m premises with over 100,000 new connections are being added every week, according to the company’s latest financial results.
In the second quarter that ended on 30th June 2010, UK’s largest broadband supplier has added more than 96,000 new customers, comparing to 123,000 net additions made in the previous quarter (Q1). Now, BT Retail’s broadband base stands at 5,227,000 which includes BT Total and Plusnet customers.
However, BT Vision, the IPTV service that is available for only BT Total broadband customers, has shown better growth in subscription base, adding more than 14,000 new customers between April and June, with the service provider is now offering premium sports channels like Sky Sports 1 and 2.
“We have made an acceptable start to the year, delivering improved financial results while investing in the future of the business. In TV we are offering great value premium sports packages and can now compete on a more even playing field.” Ian Livingston, the Chief Executive of BT said.
BT’s faster broadband package, BT Infinity which offers up to 40Mbps speed, has seen better uptake in the recent quarter, the ISP has claimed, however, without disclosing the numbers .
BT’s fibre networks (both FTTC and FTTH) would cover 2.5m homes by 2015, according to its investment plan of £2.5bn. FTTC lines are capable of delivering up to 40Mbps speeds. A quarter of fibre connections will get access to 100Mbps Fibre to the Home (FTTH) broadband, BT has earlier reported.
Meanwhile, BT’s main competitor, Virgin Media cable ISP has announced its Q2 results showing a net addition of over 28,000 customers during the quarter. Total Virgin Media customers (which includes cable and Virgin.net ADSL 2+ customers) have grown to exceed 4.207m while its cable broadband subscriptions now stand at 3,936,000.
Virgin’s faster broadband services (20Mb and 50Mb) now account for nearly one-fifth of total connections while the provider’s 50Mb XXL subscribers grew by 28% in the quarter to reach a total of 74,000, the results have revealed.
