BT to extend fibre broadband coverage

BT would invest further £1bn to expand its fibre based high-speed broadband coverage to 66% of UK population by 2015. The £2.5bn fibre deployment will see 4 million users getting access to its faster services by this year end and 10 million by the spring in 2012.

The provider was set to bring faster services only to 40% of UK population by 2012, according to earlier plans. However, the ISP revised the plans after it has earned a net profit of more than £1bn during the financial year ended on 31st March 2010.

“Assuming an acceptable environment for investment, we see the potential to roll out fibre to around two-thirds of the UK by 2015″, Ian Livingston, BT’s Chief Executive said.

During the fibre optic rollout, BT is using both Fibre to the cabinet (fttc) and Fibre to the premises (fttp) technologies depending on the market viability of the locations.

Three-fourths of the BT customers will receive less faster, up to 40Mbps via Fibre to the Cabinet lines which require relatively less investments.

BT broadband announces fibre rollout expansion

Around 25% will get access to BT’s ultra-fast FTTP lines which are capable of offering up to 100Mbps download speed, it was reported.

BT broadband subscribers have reached 5.13 million with 123,000 new connections in the first quarter 2010.
