The UK ranks 14th in broadband speeds

UK broadband lags behind its European neighbours, when it comes to fibre broadband uptake and speeds, the recent Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) report for June 2010 has revealed.

Mobile internet and Smartphones boost broadband uptake

Broadband uptake in the UK has managed to reach 71% figure in 2010, boosted by the demand for mobile broadband, UK Communications regulator, Ofcom’s latest International Communications Report shows.

Many users in Europe could access fast broadband in 2010 while mobile broadband subscriptions in EU have nearly doubled in one year, the recent report from European Commission (EC) has revealed.

A major fibre-optic broadband upgrade will enable a quarter of residents in Jersey Island to access faster connection speeds of up to 20Mbps from next month.

New DSL broadband prototype promises 700Mbps speeds

A new DSL technology promises broadband speeds of up to 700Mbps by connecting four landlines together.

Huawei, a leading firm of broadband technologies, has demonstrated a prototype of this latest technology that uses line bonding and SuperMIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technologies to increase the current maximum, achievable speeds of 100Mbps to 175Mbps on a single line. The firm has successfully demonstrated the top speeds of 700Mbps over 400 meters by bonding four lines. more »
