BT launch fibre to the cabinet roll-out in Basingstoke

Basingstoke, a town in the south-east of England will get a major fibre based broadband upgrade (Fibre to the Cabinet) that can offer download speeds between 40Mbps and 15Mbps, it was reported.

Broadband service provider, BT’s Openreach division will setup the super-fast broadband infrastructure using some 78 cabinets in the intial phase to connect more than 27,000 residential users and businesses in this region.

The upgrade is expected to be completed within a year.

BT’s South-east Regional partnership Director, Peter Cowen hoped that the new, faster broadband network would benefit both businesses and households in the region.

“Businesses are using broadband to boost their competitiveness and find new customers, whilst households are benefiting from new entertainment and educational opportunities. This fibre to the cabinet roll-out will enhance this and really help Basingstoke grow.” he added.

Keith Chapman, the Councillor in Basingstoke said that the new project would solve the issue of digital divide as there are many people in the town who do not have access to broadband internet.
