H2O begins fibre optic network in Sheffield

The fibre optic network provider H2O will launch super fast broadband network in Sheffield city, according to a report. The 15 meter long network will pass thorugh Sheffield, Bournemouth and Dundee using the sewers.

The existing fibre optic network will be upgraded by H2O to offer speeds of up to 100Mbps to the people here. The deployment of superfast broadband network is expected to be completed by this September.

It seems H2O will just lay down the network while ISPs are expected to come up to sell the broadband services to their customers. So far, none of the UK broadband providers has joined hands with H2O to implement this project, the BBC report indicates.

It should be noted that both the top UK broadband providers BT and Virgin are busy with upgrading their network to increase the speeds. BT has already launched its high speed broadband compaign using fibre to cable technology (FTTC). FTTC network of BT has already started their trials in north London and Cardiff. BT’s FTTC broadband network would cost about £1.5bn to provide high speed broadband access (up to 40MbpsP) download speeds to the 40 percent of the UK,

UK cable operator Virgin offers 50Mbps broadband in selected areas. The latest speed test results from broadband.co.uk showed that Virgin Media broadband offers the highest speeds of around 7Mbps on average.
