UK ISPs T-Mobile and Orange agree for merger plan

UK ISPs Orange and T-Mobile have agreed a merger plan and the deal is expected to be signed by November, it was reported.

After the merger, the new business entity would have 28.4 million customers and show £8.2bn revenues from sales. The combined customer base would also make it the the largest UK mobile operator with 37% of the market share, overtaking O2 Mobile UK (27% market share). The merger would also help T-Mobile UK, owned by the German firm, Deutsche Telekom to avoid the write downs to meet out the losses. As for Orange of France Telecom, the deal would mean better future in the fiercely competitive market.

Once the deal is signed, the merger proposal would be probed and approved by the UK and EU officials by early 2010.

After the completion of the deal and until the time when new branding is reviewed, both Orange and T-Mobile brands will continue to exist, it was stated. Tom Alexander, Orange chief executive would be the head of the new company while Richard Moat, the chief of T-Mobile UK would become chielf operating officer.

Joining the two businesses would save about £3.5bn in the long run, however, the merger cost such as streamling various operations of the firms is expected to be around £700m. The merged firm would have an edge over other competitors like Vodafone and O2 in a highly competitive market, no doubt. Nigel Hawkins, analyst said to the BBC:

“If the deal goes ahead, then this merged firm, along with O2 and Vodafone will have more than 90% of the UK market and there will be concern that there remains plenty of competition and that this position is not abused.”

The third largest mobile operator in UK, Orange has 22% share of market while T-Mobile is with 15%. Vodafone UK is the second largest mobile operator with 25%.

Both Orange and T-mobile say the merger deal would ultimately benefit their customers through wider, high-quality network coverage and better customer service.
