Lancashire County to get 30Mbps broadband by 2014
Superfast broadband with download speed of up to 30Mbps will reach 97% of Lancashire County by 2014, thanks to a multi-million fibre broadband project to be sponsored by the BDUK, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Lancashire County Council.
According to the report, the government will offer £10.8m through its Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme which aims to bring faster broadband to rural parts across the UK.
The ERDF will contribute a fund of £16.5m while the County Council will invest £4.7m on building the new infrastructure.
However, 3% of the County, mainly in rural areas, could miss out the superfast broadband, but will get a minimum 2Mbps broadband.
The County Council could extend the rollout to these parts by finding funds of £500,000 via community channels, it has been believed.
Superfast broadband could change the lives of people in rural Lancashire, according to Geoff Driver, leader of Lancashire County Council.
“Establishing this superfast broadband network will not only open up opportunities for businesses in Lancashire, it will revolutionise the way that people in the county, especially in rural or deprived areas, connect to the wider world” he said.
