New service that would allow users of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console to watch Sky digital TV channels using broadband was scheduled to be launched yesterday.

Subscribers to Sky broadband Unlimited and TV package who own Xbox consoles with a Gold membership can watch the content (up to 24 channels) on their Xbox consoles without any additional cost, however, Sky’s sports and movie channels will cost extra. Gold membership is available for £5 per month or £34.99 on a 12 month pre-paid card.

Other Sky broadband customers (Base, Connect and Everyday) with Sky TV will need to pay £10 per month to access to multiroom.

Non-subscribers to Sky digital services can also get the Sky content on their Xbox 360’s with £15 fee per month. Here again, access to Sky’s premium channels like Sky sports and movies will cost extra.

New broadband IPTV service does not require a satellite dish. This can make some saving, however, looking at the price structure, we cannot help thinking it is a bit expensive.

Another thing: when it comes to viewing streaming video content via broadband, especially high definition, a lot depends on the quality of broadband you receive. Most importantly, reliable speeds and the least download restrictions.

Update:

Sky broadband IPTV launch did not go on Tuesday as scheduled due to some technical problem.

Sky issued this statement:

“The service has been suspended due to an unforeseen technical issue. Sky Player engineers are hard at work to resolve the problem. We expect to have the full service available on Wednesday.”
