Android based smartphones dominate UK market

Nearly half of the smartphones in UK (49.7%) market use Android OS, according to the recent report from Kantar ComTech.

The market share of Android saw an impressive growth of 13% in the last 12 months, the data show.

By contrast, Apple iPhones which run its own operating system iOS had 7% annual growth in market share to reach 29%.

Blackberry with RIM ranked third with 15% of market share while Symbian and Windows Phone 7 have a share of 2.8% and 2.2% respectively.

The popular Nokia Lumia 800 has helped Windows Phone 7 to rise from just 0.4% market share to 2.2% in 12 months, ComTech says. The growing popularity of Windows Phone 7 OS could further increase its share to 8% by the end of this year, the firm predicts.

Smartphone sales have been soaring in recent times with half of UK population now own a smartphone, according to ComTech survey.
