Cable ISP Virgin Media to launch new set-top box with broadband

Cable broadband ISP, Virgin Media has revealed its plans to launch new set-top boxes that would enable its customers to access broadband, on-demand videos and IPTV service on a single device.

Virgin Media has signed a deal with TiVo, the US based Digital video recording company which would develop the new TV cum broadband service for Virgin Media broadband customers.

The new, next generation set-top box will come with high-defintion features that would provide enhanced TV viewing experience to the users when they access online videos or live TV channels.

Neil Berkett, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Media, hoped that the launch of new TV service would boost the cable ISP’s broadband base.

“The superiority of our fibre optic network combined with TiVo’s capabilities, will allow us to offer consumers the most significantly advanced and compelling TV service available in the UK,”

Virgin Media offers its 20Mb broadband packages using its extensive  fibre-optic broadband network  in UK. The cable gianit also offers 50Mbps service in selected areas in UK.

Currently, Virgin Media’s main competitor and market leader, Sky offers high-defintion video contents and digital TV channels through its set-top box, Sky +HD box which is now available on discount to new customers till 28 December.
