Grain broadband review 2026

Grain broadband is worth considering if you want fast uploads, a straightforward broadband service and protection from annual contract increases. Its full fibre connections offer matching download and upload speeds, with packages from 250Mbps to an expected 1,900Mbps in selected areas.

The main buying decision is whether its network reaches your home and whether you need the extras. A busy household can benefit from more capacity, but a weak upstairs Wi-Fi signal usually needs better coverage rather than a faster broadband subscription.

Grain’s introductory discounts can reduce the overall bill, although the discounted months do not begin immediately. Check the full payment schedule, renewal price and supplied equipment before choosing a package.

Contract costs and offer conditions

  • Pay the first month in full. After the half-price period, the regular monthly price resumes for the remaining minimum term.
  • The September promotion ends on 30 September 2026. Availability and final billing details depend on the address and order.
  • Optional services cost extra. Non-standard installation work can also attract a charge.
  • Check the renewal amount before the minimum term ends. Leaving during the agreed term can trigger an early termination charge.
Out-of-contract prices

After the minimum term, the service continues on a 30-day rolling basis. The applicable rate is the amount below or the current postcode-specific out-of-contract rate, whichever is lower.

Standard package Monthly renewal rate
Full Fibre 250 £27.99
Full Fibre 500 £44.99
Full Fibre 1000 £54.99
Full Fibre 2000 £42.99

Boost, Gaming and Pro versions have separate rates. A renewal offer may cost less than allowing the existing agreement to roll over.

Grain social tariffs

Eligible new and existing customers can choose a social tariff with unlimited data, free standard installation and a 12-month term. The account holder must receive an accepted benefit, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Personal Independence Payment.

Plan Download/upload Monthly price
Social Basic 15/15Mbps £12.50
Social Plus 30/30Mbps £22.50

Compare Social Plus with the standard entry offer before deciding: a social tariff is not automatically the least expensive option. Balance the full cost against contract length and the speed your household needs. Grain checks benefit evidence and does not combine social tariffs with other offers.

Households suited to Grain broadband

Grain is worth considering for

  • Homes that can order its full fibre service.
  • People uploading large work files or cloud backups.
  • Households seeking predictable contract pricing.
  • Customers who prefer broadband without a TV bundle.

Other providers may suit

  • Homes outside Grain’s current coverage.
  • Anyone needing a shorter standard contract.
  • Customers wanting TV and broadband on one bill.
  • Users who require specific networking features confirmed before ordering.

Start with what happens during the busiest hour at home. Two video meetings and an evening television stream present a different demand from several people downloading games while another uploads video footage. Count active tasks, rather than every smart plug and idle phone.

Grain plan selector

Choose a starting point based on your household’s use. Availability and equipment still need checking at your address.

Full Fibre 250 is a starting point for everyday use; compare 500 for busy households and 1000 for frequent large transfers. Consider 2000 only with suitable equipment and local availability. Weak Wi-Fi needs a coverage check.

Grain routers and Wi-Fi extenders

The Zyxel EX5601 is available with Full Fibre 500 and Full Fibre 1000 orders under Grain’s equipment terms. Eligible services offer Wi-Fi 6, while existing installations may use Icotera equipment. Confirm the supplied model when ordering or upgrading, particularly in a home with Grain hardware already installed.

Equipment option Main benefit Check before ordering
Included router Connects your wired and wireless devices Exact model and Ethernet ports
Wi-Fi extender Extends coverage into weaker rooms Compatibility, placement and ownership
Full Fibre 2000 setup Supports multi-gigabit connections 2.5GbE connection through to the device

Extenders and larger homes

Boost and Pro packages can include an extender; separate rental and purchase options are also available. Put coverage ahead of package speed if calls fail only in one room. An extender needs a useful connection back to the router, so placing it inside the dead spot can achieve little.

For a home office used every day, an Ethernet cable may be a better investment than paying repeatedly for a faster connection. It avoids the wireless link between the computer and router. A cable connection to a compatible mesh unit can also reduce the strain on wireless coverage.

Your own router

Grain can configure its router in bridge mode for compatible third-party equipment. Arrange this with support first. Keep the Grain hardware available for fault diagnosis because support cannot fully investigate your own router or mesh system.

Before buying equipment, decide which problem it needs to solve. Extra Ethernet sockets, improved room coverage and more detailed parental controls are different requirements. Buying the fastest-looking router will not necessarily address the one affecting your household.

Realistic speed and Wi-Fi expectations

At the router

Full Fibre 1000 has an expected usable speed of 900Mbps in each direction; Full Fibre 2000 has an expected 1,900Mbps. Protocol overheads mean a package name is not the same as a speed-test result.

On your device

Walls, distance and device capability affect Wi-Fi. For a single device to exceed gigabit speeds, the wired connection needs suitable ports, adapters and cables throughout.

The value of a faster package is usually time saved on large transfers or more capacity shared between users. It does not make every website load four times faster. A remote server, work VPN or ageing laptop can limit performance even when the broadband connection has capacity left.

For gaming, separate downloading from playing. A large game installation can use a fast connection heavily, whereas an online match depends more on delay, packet loss and the route to the game server. Paying for 2Gbps does not guarantee a better response time in a match.

With work files, uploads deserve equal attention. A connection with fast downloads but slower uploads can leave a large backup running for much longer. Grain’s matching upload capacity is useful here, particularly when several people send substantial files. Ordinary email and occasional calls provide less reason to pay for gigabit service.

If performance disappoints, compare a wired test with a wireless test before upgrading. Fast wired results and slow bedroom results point towards coverage or the device. Slow results over both connections justify further investigation with support.

Overview of Grain broadband

Grain builds its own full fibre network rather than supplying residential broadband through Openreach. Its point-to-point design gives each connected home a dedicated fibre link. That describes the access connection; it is not a promise that every destination on the wider internet has unlimited capacity.

Availability is specific to the premises. A town being named in a rollout announcement does not mean every street can order, and street works do not establish an activation date. Check the full address before arranging the end of an existing service.

Choosing a package

Package Useful starting point Reason to spend more
Full Fibre 250 Everyday streaming, calls and browsing Regular overlap between large transfers and other use
Full Fibre 500 Busy homes with simultaneous tasks Frequent large files where shorter waits matter
Full Fibre 1000 Heavy downloading and uploading Multi-gigabit use with compatible equipment
Full Fibre 2000 Demanding transfers and shared capacity Already the fastest package in this range

Optional features and public IP addresses

Choose the speed first, then decide whether an extender or public IP address adds something you need. A Boost or Pro label should not replace checking the actual inclusions and total cost in the order summary.

A public IPv4 address is not included for every customer as standard. This can matter if you want direct incoming connections to a home server or need a particular remote-access arrangement. Most browsing, streaming and ordinary video calls do not require a static IP.

Static-IP pricing depends on the available option, so confirm the charge before ordering. Do not buy this extra solely for a promise of faster gaming: an unchanging address does not itself shorten the route between your console and a game server.

Installation and switching

Preparing for installation

A standard installation brings Grain fibre into the home and connects the supplied equipment. Agree the cable route and router position before the work begins. A convenient entry point near the front wall is not always the best wireless location for an office at the back.

  1. Confirm the address is ready to order, rather than accepting only registrations of interest.
  2. Arrange any landlord or building permission needed for the work.
  3. Choose an equipment position with nearby power and room for the cables.
  4. Discuss any unusual route or additional work before agreeing to a charge.

In a home with Grain equipment already fitted, activation may involve less work. Leave existing fibre fittings alone and ask Grain to check what is needed. Do not assume an Openreach connection box can simply be used for a different network.

Switching from another provider

One Touch Switch lets Grain coordinate the change with the existing provider when you opt into the process. Keep the old connection active while the new service is arranged; cancelling separately can disrupt the transfer.

Before placing the order, check the current contract end date and any charge for leaving early. Also identify services tied to that account, such as a telephone number or television subscription. Broadband cancellation does not necessarily deal with every separate subscription in the household.

If Grain offers help while you are still in contract, get the arrangement in writing. Check which bill you must pay, when discounts begin and whether your old provider’s termination charge remains your responsibility. A discounted overlap period is different from reimbursement of an exit fee.

Grain home phone and TV options

Broadband does not require a paid home-phone package. If you still use a landline handset, Grain offers optional VoIP calls through the broadband connection on one-month rolling terms.

Phone package Included calls Monthly price
Unlimited Weekend UK landlines at weekends £4.99
Unlimited Everyday UK landlines every day £7.99
Unlimited Plus UK landlines and mobiles £14.99

Check charges for destinations outside the allowance. If most calls already come from an inclusive mobile plan, a separate home-phone package may add little value.

Grain does not bundle television subscriptions. You can use your own compatible streaming device or smart TV and pay for the services you want separately. This gives flexibility, although several subscriptions can add up; compare the combined household bill with a bundle before assuming either approach is cheaper.

There is no need to replace a television simply because you switch broadband. Check that its apps still receive updates and that it can connect to the new Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. The broadband provider and the service supplying your programmes are separate decisions.

Is Grain broadband any good?

Grain has a persuasive offer for homes that prioritise upload capacity and predictable contract costs. Its limitations are more about address availability, equipment choices and service expectations than a shortage of speed options.

Performance and practical value

For a household moving from a slow connection, Full Fibre 250 can be a substantial improvement without choosing the fastest package. A faster service becomes easier to justify when a regular task takes too long or several demanding activities compete at once.

Do not judge reliability from the maximum speed alone. A short interruption can matter more during a meeting than a slower download, and a wireless problem inside the home can look like a broadband fault. The distinction affects both the right package and the support needed.

Customer support

Grain provides UK-based support by phone, chat and email. Phone and chat hours are 9am–7pm on weekdays and 9am–5pm at weekends. That gives access outside normal office hours, although it is not a staffed 24-hour helpline.

When comparing customer feedback, separate an efficient installation from experience of fault resolution months later. Neither a handful of enthusiastic comments nor one difficult case establishes how every customer will be treated.

Overall cost

Compare the complete contract payment schedule, including add-ons, rather than the cheapest promotional month. The absence of an annual increase helps with budgeting, but the later regular price still needs to suit your finances.

Grain also offers a Price Match Guarantee for equivalent competing packages, including at renewal. Keep the alternative offer’s details and check that speeds and terms match. It is a request for Grain to assess, rather than an automatic discount against any cheaper broadband deal.

Our verdict

Full Fibre 250 is the first package to compare for everyday household use. Consider Full Fibre 500 when the home is busy, and gigabit or multi-gigabit service when large transfers create a real waiting-time problem.

Grain’s appeal is strongest when fast uploads and contract price protection matter more than bundled entertainment. Confirm the equipment and renewal rate, and spend on better Wi-Fi coverage before buying bandwidth that a weak room cannot use.

Main advantages

  • Matching download and upload capacity.
  • No annual in-contract broadband increases.
  • Standard installation included.
  • Optional phone and Wi-Fi services.

Main disadvantages

  • Availability is restricted to Grain’s network.
  • Introductory billing needs careful comparison.
  • Renewal can increase the ongoing cost.
  • Specific equipment and public-IP needs require checking.

Grain broadband FAQs

Does Grain broadband use the Openreach network?

No. Grain supplies its service through its own full fibre network. Having another provider’s full fibre connection does not establish Grain availability; check the home’s full address.

Can I keep my phone number when I join Grain?

A number transfer can be arranged with Grain’s phone service. Tell Grain that you want to retain the number before the old service closes, and confirm the transfer arrangements. Avoid cancelling the number separately while the transfer is pending.

Will Grain’s phone service work during a power cut?

The router and connection need power, so internet-based calls can stop during a power or broadband outage. If the telephone is your only way to request emergency help, discuss suitable arrangements before switching. Check any care alarm separately for compatibility.

Can I take Grain with me when I move home?

If the new address is covered, Grain can arrange a new contract there. If it cannot serve the new address, its moving-home policy allows penalty-free cancellation with evidence. Contact Grain before moving and leave the installed router at the old home.

Do I have to return the Grain router?

The installed router normally stays at the home; do not remove it without Grain’s agreement. Rented or loaned Wi-Fi extenders and other equipment may need returning. Follow the return instructions and keep proof of postage.

Does Grain run a credit check?

Grain’s current sign-up policy says it does not run credit checks. You still need to meet its account and payment requirements, and remain responsible for the bills throughout the agreement.

Is there a data limit on Grain broadband?

Residential packages include unlimited data, subject to the service’s usage conditions. Unlimited data concerns the amount transferred; it does not mean every device receives the full package speed simultaneously.

Can I cancel if the broadband does not perform as expected?

Report the fault and allow Grain to investigate. Keep a record of wired results, dates and support conversations. Any right to leave without an early termination charge depends on the circumstances and your agreement; do not assume a disappointing Wi-Fi result alone cancels the contract.
