Community Fibre, the London-based full-fibre broadband operator, has introduced a new installation option called Fibre to your Room. The service allows customers to choose the exact room where their fibre connection and router are set up, giving them more control over performance and coverage inside their home.

What the new installation offers
In a standard installation, fibre broadband is usually brought into the home at the nearest external wall and the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) with the router is placed within about 10 metres of that entry point. This can leave the equipment tucked away in corners, behind televisions, or far from where it is most useful.
With Fibre to your Room, customers can instead select a preferred location within the property. Community Fibre engineers will then route up to 40 metres of fibre from the entry point to that chosen room. This could be a home office, living room, or gaming space where the fastest and most reliable connection is needed.
The service costs a one-off £75 and is available on every Community Fibre broadband plan, regardless of contract length. Both new and existing customers can request it.
How the installation is carried out
Engineers carry out the work neatly, fixing the fibre cable along walls or skirting boards as required. If the route passes through more than one room, they may need to drill a small hole—about the size of a pencil—to continue the run. Any internal or external holes are sealed and fire-stopped at the end of the job.
The entry point can be on the ground, first, or second floor. The 40-metre limit usually covers the size of a typical London home, but outbuildings, lofts, garages and basements are excluded.
How it Enhances Your Broadband and Wi-Fi Performance
Router placement is one of the biggest factors affecting in-home broadband speeds. Wired devices such as PCs or games consoles always deliver the fastest and most consistent results when connected directly to the router. Wi-Fi is also strongest when users are close to the router, and weak spots can develop if the router ends up in a far corner of the property.
By allowing equipment to be installed where it is most useful, Fibre to your Room helps customers avoid long Ethernet runs, trailing wires, or heavy reliance on Wi-Fi boosters. It is particularly useful for people working from home or for families with multiple devices streaming and gaming at the same time.
Combining with Premium WiFi
Community Fibre also offers a Premium WiFi package on its faster plans. This uses mesh technology with multiple access points to extend coverage across the property. When Fibre to your Room is combined with Premium WiFi, customers can place the router centrally and then add mesh pods to eliminate dead zones.
This approach is aimed at larger households or properties with thick walls, where Wi-Fi performance can otherwise drop in certain rooms.
How it’s different to the usual setup
Most UK broadband providers give customers some say over where the ONT and router are installed. However, the choice is often restricted to a short distance from the entry wall. Community Fibre’s option is different because it guarantees a much longer fibre run inside the home, with a clear distance limit and a fixed cost.
Other networks may offer premium installation packages, but Community Fibre’s new option is more transparent and available across all its broadband plans.
Community Fibre broadband packages
Community Fibre operates one of the largest independent fibre networks in London, covering more than 1.3 million premises and with over 400,000 customers connected. The company offers symmetrical speeds on its broadband packages, meaning upload and download are the same on faster plans.
Current Community Fibre packages include:
- 150Mbps fibre
- 500Mbps fibre
- 1Gbps fibre
- 2.5Gbps fibre
- 5Gbps fibre
All packages come with unlimited usage and can be taken on 12 or 18 or 24 month contracts, with no mid-contract price rises. Optional add-ons include Premium WiFi for guaranteed coverage and VoIP phone services.
Things to check before the install
To make the installation go smoothly, customers are advised to plan a few things in advance:
- Decide which room is best for the ONT and router, ideally a central or frequently used space.
- Work out where the fibre will enter the property and ensure the chosen room is within 40 metres of that point.
- Check there is a nearby power socket for the equipment to avoid trailing cables.
Wrapping up
Across the UK, default broadband installations typically place the ONT and router just inside the entry wall, often leaving customers to relocate equipment later using mesh kits, long Ethernet cables, or powerline adapters. Community Fibre’s approach gives households a more flexible option without relying on do-it-yourself solutions.
For customers in London where the network is available, the Fibre to your Room option adds a practical way to unlock the best performance from their broadband package, particularly as faster multi-gigabit plans become more common.
