Hyperoptic adds 500Mbps and 1Gbps Fair Fibre social tariffs

Summary

  • Hyperoptic has expanded its Fair Fibre social tariff range from two packages to four, adding 500Mbps and 1Gbps options.
  • The updated Fair Fibre prices are £12 (50Mb), £13 (150Mb), £17 (500Mb) and £20 (1Gb) per month.
  • Fair Fibre stays on a monthly rolling basis with 30 days’ notice and no activation or installation charge.
  • Eligible existing customers can move onto Fair Fibre without a termination fee.
  • Eligibility checks run online for several income-related benefits, while some benefit types require a phone call.

Hyperoptic has made significant changes to its Fair Fibre Plans, the provider’s social tariff broadband for people on certain state benefits. The biggest update is the arrival of two faster packages: 500Mbps and 1Gbps.

Hyperoptic social tariffs

Hyperoptic is a city-focused full fibre provider and says its network now reaches 1.9 million UK homes. Fair Fibre is only available at addresses where Hyperoptic has built its full fibre network.

New Fair Fibre prices and speeds

The Fair Fibre range now includes four packages, all with unlimited usage:

  • 50Mb: £12 per month
  • 150Mb: £13 per month
  • 500Mb: £17 per month
  • 1Gb: £20 per month

This replaces the earlier Fair Fibre set-up that offered 50Mb at £15 per month and 150Mb at £20 per month.

Contract terms, fees and the optional phone add-on

Fair Fibre continues as a monthly rolling broadband package. Customers can cancel with 30 days’ notice.

Hyperoptic lists Fair Fibre with free activation and installation. The provider also offers an optional landline add-on with evening and weekend UK calls for an extra monthly charge.

Hyperoptic says eligible new or existing customers can switch to Fair Fibre at any time, and existing customers can move across without a termination fee.

Who qualifies and how the checks work

Hyperoptic lists a set of income-related benefits that can be checked online for new customers, using an eligibility process that includes consent-based verification.

Benefits Hyperoptic lists for online checking include:

  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

Hyperoptic also lists other benefit categories that require a phone call to confirm eligibility, including:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Care Leavers’ Support

Symmetric speeds explained

On full fibre, providers can offer upload speed equal to the download speed. That matters for everyday tasks such as video calling, sending large attachments, cloud storage and uploading video.

Hyperoptic’s own speed information states:

  • The 50Mb product comes with a much lower upload speed than the download speed (50Mbps download speed with fully 5Mbps upload speed).
  • The 150Mb, 500Mb and 1Gb products come with upload speed equal to the download speed.

This is one reason the faster Fair Fibre packages stand out: they give eligible households access to high upload bandwidth as well as fast downloads.

How Hyperoptic compares with other UK social tariffs

UK social tariff deals are discounted broadband packages for people on certain benefits, with each provider setting its own eligibility rules and speeds. Most social tariffs focus on basic speeds, but the market includes a mix of fixed-line and mobile options.

Here are examples from Ofcom’s published social tariff list (prices and average speeds vary by provider and location availability):

  • Virgin Media Essential Broadband: £12.50 per month, 15Mbps average speed
  • BT Home Essentials: £16 per month, 36Mbps average speed (with other Home Essentials options at £21 for 36Mbps and £24 for 67Mbps)
  • Sky Broadband Basics: £20 per month, 36Mbps average speed
  • NOW Broadband Basics: £20 per month, 36Mbps average speed
  • Vodafone Fibre 2 Essentials: £20 per month, 73Mbps average speed
  • EE Basics: £12 per month, up to 25Mbps
  • Community Fibre Essential: £12.50 per month, 35Mbps average speed (London availability)

Hyperoptic’s addition of 500Mbps and 1Gbps social tariff packages puts it into a small group of providers offering ultrafast social tariffs, with availability depending on network build areas.

Hyperoptic’s standard packages and where Fair Fibre differs

Hyperoptic’s standard residential range includes full fibre packages such as 50Mb, 150Mb, 500Mb and 1Gb, sold on different contract lengths depending on the deal available at your address.

On its own pricing pages, Hyperoptic has recently shown standard broadband deals starting from £20 per month on a 24-month contract for 50Mb, with a £19 activation fee. Hyperoptic also lists scheduled price rises on that deal from April 2026 (£24 per month) and April 2027 (£28 per month), and notes that prices vary by location.

Fair Fibre differs in two main ways:

  • It is a discounted social tariff for eligible customers.
  • Hyperoptic states it comes with free activation and installation and remains a monthly rolling package.

What to do if you want the Fair Fibre price

Start with an address check, because Hyperoptic only supplies service where its network is live at your property. If you qualify through the online benefits list, you can complete the checks on Hyperoptic’s website. If you qualify through the phone-only list (such as PIP or Housing Benefit), you’ll need to call Hyperoptic to confirm eligibility and provide the required evidence.
