Virgin Media is set to make the internet faster for its customers through a free upgrade, which will increase upload speeds for its top-tier fibre packages.
Currently, if you’re on the M500 plan, your upload speed is 36Mbps. Soon, that speed will jump up to 52Mbps. This is a significant increase – almost 50% faster than before.
And if you’re using the Gig1 plan, get ready for an even bigger change. Your upload speed, currently 52Mbps, will double to 104Mbps.
These improvements follow a speed boost Virgin Media introduced in November of the previous year. Back then, Virgin Media increased download speeds for two of its plans. The M100 (now called M125) went from 108Mbps to 132Mbps average download speed. The M200 (now M250) increased from 213Mbps to 264Mbps. Like the upcoming changes, those speed boosts came free of charge.
Despite these upgrades, Virgin Media users have generated complaints about slower upload speeds compared to those offered by other providers. Additionally, Virgin Media connections have also been complained for higher ‘ping’ times. Ping is the reaction time of your connection – how fast you get a response after you’ve sent out a request.
Some providers in the UK offer ‘symmetrical’ upload speeds over 900Mbps. Symmetrical speeds mean the upload and download speeds are the same. Providers like Hyperoptic and Community Fibre offer this kind of service.
Openreach based internet providers such as BT, TalkTalk, and Sky offer faster upload speeds on their full fibre plans than those currently available from Virgin Media. However, they don’t offer symmetrical speeds.
